Guide for Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (2024)

Walkthrough Overview

Welcome to my guide to hundo-ing Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition! I've poured a lot of time into this game and I hope that this guide can help you on your way to completing this beast of a game. Tales of Vesperia is a typical JRPG, full of stereotypical (and loveable) characters who make strange decisions, large collections to complete, a sprawling overworld and detailed menus. I enjoyed the original version of this game a ton so naturally I decided to 100% it all over again once I found out about the Definitive Edition.

One thing before we get started here. This guide is intended for the Definitive Edition of the game. If you are playing the original version of the game, a lot of the content in this guide will make no sense to you. Instead of being just a remastered version, the definitive edition of this game contains two new playable characters, additional locations to visit, additional bosses. . . additional everything really. Most of the achievements are for the same actions but there are a few notable exceptions. All that to say, if you are playing the original version I recommend you check out the guide for that version instead.

How to use this guide

The general hints and tips page contains a run-down of all the collectibles and then an overview of the game mechanics. I recommend skimming the collectibles section there before starting this game so you can wrap your head around what you're in for. It's not necessary to look over the game mechanics section, which is more for reference since you will learn about the mechanics while you progress through the game, and I will include brief explanations of new mechanics as they arise in the walkthrough portion of this guide.

Playthrough 1 contains a step by step walkthrough to get you through the long first run of the game without missing anything (and there are a ton of missable things so don't skip around too much). I have also written a streamlined guide for Playthrough 1 that is bullet point for those of you who don't want to read my explanations of things and detailed directions.

All the remaining pages are reference pages containing lists of various things in case you need to look something in particular. There's also an appendix containing links to all the maps I've made for the guide.

Finally, I have also prepared a google sheet that you can use to help track your progress on your own if you like. It is not necessary to use it but I'm a crazy person who really enjoys checking off long checklists and, hey, maybe some of you do too. Here is the link.

Playthroughs

A minimum of two playthroughs are technically required for this game, however, doing it in two requires a ton of grinding at the end of the first playthrough, and a much more difficult second playthrough. I think it's more fun (and probably quicker in the end) to do this in 2.5 playthroughs instead.

When you transition a game to new game +, you are allowed to apply certain modifications to the game, some of which are necessary to obtain achievements, or at least render certain really tricky or grindy achievements realistic.

Playthrough 1 will involve systematically completing nearly everything in the game to give us the lion's share of the achievements.

Playthrough 2 will be a speedrun of the story where there is plenty of grace time for you to work in completing additional stuff that you may have missed on your first playthrough. At the end, we'll complete almost everything that we didn't at the end of the first playthrough.

Playthrough 3 will be a partial playthrough to the end of Act 1 to get the final two achievements.

A Note on Spoilers

In this guide I will strive to avoid spoilers for future events, but once the event has been passed in the walkthrough I won't consider it a spoiler anymore, so don't scroll way down unless you're willing to risk some spoilers. The one story aspect that I will not be worrying about spoiling is who the party characters are. Not only do nearly all of them join the party shortly after you meet them, but they're all shown together on the first splash page and opening cutscene of the game so I don't feel the need to keep who will be in your party secret.

Acknowledgements and more material

Though the vast majority of the information in this guide was written as I played through the game myself multiple times and taken from my own experience from the game, I did reference a number of other sources occasionally to look for alternative strategies or fill in minor gaps in my information. I would like to thank the following people for their own work on this game and the original version:

Admiral Curtiss for his detailed scrub of the game's data.

MaiShinobimasu for a solid previous walkthrough of this game. His solid treatment of the game partly inspired me to create a proper TA achievement-oriented walkthrough.
